About
Since 1928, Stefan Mittler Monuments has taken pride in designing and crafting memorials, markers and cut stone. Every piece is custom designed by third-generation craftsman Matt Carpenter, to reflect the individual style of every customer.
Matt has been creating monuments since 1989 when he joined the business with his dad, Fritz Carpenter.
The Early Years
Stefan Mittler immigrated to Madison, Wisconsin from Germany in 1926. Prior to opening his own shop he worked on local stone landmarks including the University of Wisconsin Field House and various State and City buildings.
In 1928, he opened Stefan Mittler Monuments at its original location on South Orchard Street.
MidCentury Years
In 1952, son-in-law Fritz Carpenter partnered with Stefan in the business. Fritz was already a skilled artist in such mediums as painting and sculpting. He took over as owner and chief designer when Stefan passed away in 1962.
In addition to monument design, Fritz's specialties included limestone sculptures. His works are still featured at churches throughout south central Wisconsin.
We offer quality craftsmanship to our customers in south central Wisconsin. Each of our monument designs is unique, just like you.
